A menstruation cycle is a normal change in a woman's body, where the body prepares for a possible pregnancy. Each month the ovaries release an egg for fertilization, which when not fertilized is shed along with the uterus lining, through the vaginal opening. A healthy period cycle repeats every 21 to 35 days. It is medically stated that a healthy period indicates the internal health of a woman's body.

What are irregular menstruation cycles?

In a normal condition, women experience periods every 21 to 35days like clockwork, which last for around two to seven days. Longer cycles are also normal in some women. Many times, this cycle is disrupted, reducing or increasing irregularly, due to hormonal imbalance in women.

Every person has a unique set of symptoms during menstruation – painful, painless, heavy, light or long or short may vary from person to person. However, every month, the symptoms for an individual remain the same. This is normal of one's period, any prolonged changes may be considered as irregular.

General causes of irregular periods:


  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is a sign of early pregnancy to have a delayed or missed period. Post-partum delays and breastfeeding characteristically delay the arrival of menstruation after pregnancy.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A common hormonal disorder that causes small cysts to appear in the uterus, causing irregular menstrual cycle.
  • Premature ovarian failure: This refers to the loss of regular ovarian function before menopause, around 40, causing irregular or infrequent periods for years.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): This infection of the reproductive organs can cause irregular menstrual bleeding.
  • Fibroids: Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous lumps of the uterus. They can cause heavy bleeding during and between periods.

Other disorders like miscarriage, thyroid, tuberculosis, anaemia, eating disorders, excessive work outs etc. are all causes of irregular periods. Excessive and prolonged periodic irregularities should be investigated, as they may indicate a severe condition that may require immediate medical attention.

Home remedies for irregular periods:

Many traditional home remedies can be used to treat menstrual cycle irregularities efficiently within the comfort of your home. These home remedies are from your own kitchen and can be consumed regularly without side effects.

  1. Ginger: prepare water by boiling ground ginger in it and consume on a regular basis for relieve from irregular periods and bloating.
  2. Cinnamon: A traditional Chinese remedy for menstrual cramps and periodic bleeding, cinnamon, works wonders, in tea or water.
  3. Green papaya: Green papaya is considered useful in regulating menstrual flow as it helps contract muscle fibres in the uterus.
  4. Coriander seeds: Drinking coriander infused boiled water three times a day, a week before the period is an age old home remedy for irregular menses
  5. Carrot juice: A glass of carrot juice is a great home remedy for irregular periods, as it balances hormones in women.
  6. Mint: Dried mint ground mixed with honey is an ayurvedic treatment for menstrual problems since ancient times.

Why should one track Menstruation cycles?

It is gravely important to track one's periods, irregularities, excessive bleeding, missed periods, unpredicted or untimely bleeding etc. as it may signal an underlying health condition.

Eating healthy, sleeping well and regular exercise are important for a healthy menstrual cycle in women. Irregularities may occur due to stress and lack of nutrition, effecting overall appearance, bloating and causing fatigue. Taking care of one's health is mandatory for healthy functioning of the body.
