Vaginal discharge plays an important role in the female reproductive system. Fluid made by glands inside the vagina and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection. Most of the time, vaginal discharge is perfectly normal. However, excessive vaginal discharge is experienced by many women as well. So do you know what does it mean and what can you do if it presents?

What could excessive vaginal discharge signify?

It can be normal and harmless for excessive vaginal discharge at times because certain physiological changes in the body can lead to excessive secretions, such as ovulation, sexual excitement, pregnancy, etc.

Ovulation: As we all know, hormones serves a housekeeping part for a woman's health. It's high for the progesterone level during ovulation that will lead to continuous discharge from the vagina. This is normal and is a healthy sign in a woman of reproductive age.

Sexual excitement: Vaginal discharge or secretions serve as a natural lubricant during sexual life. Generally, vaginal discharge will be increased excessively during sexual excitement procedure.

Pregnancy: It is perfectly normal during pregnancy to have a clear milky discharge from the vagina. Vaginal discharge can be increased by hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy.

None of those changes is cause for alarm. However, if the color, smell, or consistency seems significantly unusual, especially if it accompanied by vaginal itching or burning, you could be noticing an infection or other condition.

What you can do?

1. Visit your gynecologist

When you experience any change in the secretions of your vagina, it is better to visit a gynecologist to get a test. If one's vaginal discharge is caused by an UTI, it can be treated effectively with antibiotics and herbal medicine like Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill. It's also advised to go for a pap smear to be screened for cervical cancer sometimes.

2. Have a balanced diet

To keep a balanced diet also helps to maintain vaginal health and fight infections. Try to void foods that are acidic in nature and eat more fruits and yoghurt since these can neutralize the acid content in the body.

3. Keep your vaginal area clean

It's very important for a woman to keep the vaginal area healthy and free of infections. Thus, try to maintain high levels of hygiene in your daily life. Avoid perfumed washes and douches as they could disrupt the normal pH balance of the area. Washing with warm water and a mild vaginal wash twice a day should serve the purpose.
