In simple words, infertility is when a couple is incapable to conceive a baby via natural process or regular unprotected sex. If a couple is not using any birth control method and do regular unprotected sexual intercourse for one year but still can't conceive, then couple is said to be infertile.

Today approx one out of every six couple is found unable to conceive. However advanced treatments are now available to treat infertility but still several women are there find it difficult to become mother even after repeated attempts of assisted conception methods. For such females who experience multiple ART failures, IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is mostly recommended by Gynecologists.

Choosing IVF as your fertility solution is not as easy decision as it seems. The process demands so much in terms of emotionally, financially and psychologically. The treatment is mostly suggested when all other treatments for the couple didn't work. Also the treatment is recommended to the females with blocked or damaged Fallopian Tubes.


According to the medical studies, the chances of success with IVF majorly depend on the age of the females. For older women (above 40 years), the success rate is lower between 15 to 20%, for younger women (less than 35 years) the success rates as low as 30-35% and for 35-37 years old females, 25% of chances of success is there. (Keep in mind the above success rate is just an approximation based on female's age. The actual success rate may vary from clinic to clinic). In case, donated eggs are used, the success rate would be around 40-45%.

The IVF was successfully used in the year 1981 and since its introduction in the medical science, 4 billion babies have been born with this method. The couples undergoing IVF cycle, finds that it is stressful because of the involvement of an array of screening tests including injections, ultrasounds and blood tests. Every female undergoing IVF is always worried about how the treatment will turn out, whether it will be effective or result oriented or not.

Pre cycle consultation, preparation, pregnancy tests and so forth are some initial steps of In Vitro Fertilization. Learning more about the different steps involved in the procedure makes it easier for couples to cope with the stress that comes with treatment. IVF process usually takes one or half month to complete.

  • The first step involves in the process is ovulation. Up to 14 or 15 days, females are on the hormonal therapy in order to stimulate the ovaries for higher egg production. To enhance the chances of conception, doctors retrieve several eggs and to monitor the growth of eggs, blood tests and ultrasound are used.
  • Once doctor find that eggs are ready to retrieve, he/she retrieve eggs by keeping female under anesthesia. However in some cases, ovaries are not accessible, then doctor perform retrieval process via laparoscopic technique.
  • After that, doctors examine the retrieved eggs to choose the best ones for successful pregnancy. Then the eggs are placed with prepared sperm in a cultural medium.
  • After 2-3 days of insemination, the healthy embryos (one or two) are transferred back into the female's uterus for implantation.
